Economic Benefits of Integrated Regional Climate Adaptation in Canadian Coastal Communities
April, 2025 - Coastal communities across Canada are on the front lines of rising seas, stronger storms, and accelerating erosion. This new report, prepared by All One Sky Foundation for Natural Resources Canada, makes a clear economic case for tackling these challenges through integrated, regional-scale climate adaptation. Drawing on global evidence and North American case studies relevant to the Canadian context, it shows that when communities plan and invest together—across jurisdictions, sectors and coastal zones such as littoral cells—they can lower life-cycle costs, avoid maladaptation, and strengthen supply-chain and economic resilience. The findings reveal that regional coordination—together with a combination of adaptive pathways, managed retreat, and nature-based solutions—offer the most cost-efficient climate adaptation strategy for Canada’s coastal communities.
ENERGY EFFICIENCY IN THE AFFORDABLE HOUSING SECTOR
